Family & Matrimonial
Matrimonial matters, divorce, succession planning, and adoption.
Empathy, Privacy, and Fair Resolution
Family legal matters, whether it is a divorce, a custody dispute, a maintenance claim, or an inheritance question, are among the most consequential situations a person will face. They are not just legal questions. They are deeply personal ones, and the advice you receive at each stage can shape your life and your children's lives for years to come. At HRU Legal, we approach every family matter with the seriousness and sensitivity it deserves. We listen carefully before we advise, we give you an honest picture of your situation, and we always keep your long-term wellbeing and your family's wellbeing at the centre of every decision.
We provide representation and advisory across all types of family and matrimonial matters: mutual and contested divorce, child custody and visitation, maintenance and alimony, domestic violence protection, succession, Will drafting, and inheritance disputes. Where an amicable resolution is possible, we work actively toward it through mediation and negotiation, because a settlement that both parties accept is almost always more lasting and less damaging than one imposed by a court. When court proceedings become unavoidable, we provide committed and effective representation in Family Courts and the High Court throughout the process.
Restoring Balance
We aim to resolve family conflict with minimal acrimony, prioritizing the long-term well-being of all involved.

01Counselling
The first meeting is not about collecting documents or filling in forms. It is a confidential, unhurried conversation where we listen to your situation in full: the history of the relationship, what has happened, what your immediate concerns are, what you need in the near term, and what outcome you are hoping for in the long run. We do not come in with a predetermined solution. We cannot give you accurate advice without first understanding your specific circumstances completely.
After listening, we give you an honest assessment of your legal position: which personal law applies, what grounds exist for the relief you are seeking, what the financial position looks like on both sides, what the children's situation means legally, and whether there are any safety concerns that require immediate action. We tell you what is realistic, not what you want to hear, because an accurate picture at this stage prevents far bigger problems later.
We also advise you at this stage on whether your matter is better suited to mediation or to court proceedings. Many clients who come in expecting a long court fight leave with a faster, less expensive, and less adversarial alternative. Our recommendation is always determined by what genuinely serves your interests.
Domain Mastery
Divorce and Separation
We provide representation in all forms of matrimonial dissolution: mutual consent divorce and contested divorce on grounds of cruelty, desertion, adultery, and unsound mind, under the Hindu Marriage Act, Muslim Personal Law, and the Special Marriage Act. Every matter is handled with dignity, complete discretion, and a sustained focus on protecting the client's financial security and personal wellbeing.
Child Custody
We provide representation in custody and guardianship applications, with the child's best interests as the governing standard in every decision. We advise on interim custody arrangements in urgent situations, cases involving a child being taken without the other parent's consent, international parental abduction within the Hague Convention framework, and detailed parenting plans for consent-based custody arrangements.
Succession and Wills
We draft Wills that are legally valid, clearly expressed, and resistant to challenge, specifying beneficiaries, share allocations, and executor authorities without ambiguity. We also provide services in probate applications, Letters of Administration, succession certificates, and intestate succession matters. For larger estates, we advise on comprehensive estate planning incorporating Wills, family trusts, and updated nomination arrangements.
